New Players was set up in Newlands, Wellington, in 1975 and incorporated under the provisions of the Incorporated Societies Act 1908 the following year. It changed its name to New Players Theatre Company Incorporated in 1986.

Our Aim
New Players aims to present non professional theatre of the highest standard that remains within the reach of everybody. It works constantly to achieve its objectives without compromising the principle of being a good citizen and a socially responsible society.
It abides by all laws, regulations and codes of practice affecting its activities as an incorporated society engaged in the performance of live theatre, in particular those applying to health, safety, community standards and copyright. It abides by its own constitution. It accepts all reasonable restrictions on its activities in order to enhance its relationships with its audiences, its neighbours, the community at large and its own members.
Since 1993 the society has complied with the requirements of the Income Tax Act 1973 in respect of its having a charitable nature. Donations and business sponsorships to the society are therefore tax deductible and waivers exist for certain taxes associated with bequests, gifts and conveyances.
Where we are
New Players has always seen itself as being Newlands based with Newlands/Paparangi as its main catchment area. At 1 March 2002, 24 percent of members lived in Newlands, Paparangi or Grenada; 24 percent in Johnsonville, Churton Park, Tawa or Broadmeadows; 6 percent in other northern suburbs; 12 percent in other Wellington city suburbs; 20 percent in the greater Wellington region and 14 percent further afield.
New Players has historically presented three or more productions a year. Difficulties in finding a venue have forced a reduction in the number of productions reaching the boards over recent years.
Until 1994 the society staged its productions at Newlands College in Bracken Road, Newlands. The college's increased use of its own facilities forced New Players to move and the society turned to Onslow College in Burma Road, Johnsonville. Onslow College is also no longer available because of other demands.
New Players has also put on productions at Wilton House and Johnsonville Terrace Centre.
It strives for the regular and frequent production of the highest quality live theatre for the enjoyment of the people of Wellington and in particular the residents of Newlands, Johnsonville and their surrounding suburbs.
It seeks to offer its target audience a wide and balanced variety of live theatrical productions. It encourages within Newlands, Johnsonville and their surrounding suburbs the involvement of schools and young people in its activities.
In our community
It involves itself in community activities in Newlands, Johnsonville and their surrounding suburbs and it takes an active role in district, regional and national non professional theatre organisations.
The company sponsors prizes for performing arts at Newlands College, Onslow College and Newlands Intermediate School.
